Abstract Technology innovations over the years are being used to create engineering solutions at a very rapid pace. This talk will provide a success story as an example to students charting out a successful career. I will articulate an example that benefits from the focus on data, which is being generated at an increasing rate. Some people characterize Data as the “new oil”. I will postulate that Data by itself has limited Value. To create value from Data it must be positioned to solve one or more problems. At IEEE we have created solutions that leverage our Research based Data and create solutions. One such solution is an Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning based combo Search and Knowledge engine that uses NLP (Natural Language Processing) called “AskIEEE”. This is a platform that allows non-engineers, students as well as experienced engineers to ask questions and get answers. The answer is based on IEEE information that has been ingested into the engine. The second use case creates IEEE DataPort. This is a searchable repository of research Data. The Data can be linked to the author’s IEEE publication and anyone can upload Datasets. The Datasets get screened for the metadata and Quality and are assigned a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). [] Dr. Rakesh Kumar, IEEE Life Fellow Chair, IEEE DataPort Chair, IEEE Data-based Business Strategy Ad Hoc Committee Past-Chair, IEEE Roadmaps Past-President IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society Founder & President TCX Technology Connexions Dr. Rakesh Kumar is a semiconductor industry veteran, an entrepreneur, and an educator. Currently he Chairs the IEEE/Technical Activities Data-based trategy AdHoc committee, and DataPort. He is the past-Chair of IEEE Roadmaps. He participates in the IEEE 2050, and Future Directions committees. He has been IEEE SSCS President, an IEEE HKN Governor, and on the Boards of IEEE SSCS, TEMS, SSIT and has served on the Industry Engagement committee. He is the Founder, & President of Technology Connexions. He educates and mentors in the IEEE VoLT program, and potential entrepreneurs at UCSD. Dr. Kumar authored the book “Fabless Semiconductor Implementation”, published by McGraw Hill. He is in the IEEE TAB Hall of Honor. During 40+ years in the semiconductor industry he has been VP&GM at Cadence Design and has held various technical and management positions at Unisys and Motorola. Voiceband modems convert a stream of digital symbols into audible signals and transmit them over the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The first voiceband modem was developed in 1958 and operated at 110 bits/s. Being subject to international standards developed by the International Union of Telecommunications, Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T), a body of the United Nations, these modems consistently increased their transmission speeds within the next several decades. Every step in the standards process involved a major development in signal processing and communications, such as various forms of adaptive equalization, echo cancellation, and trellis coded modulation. These contributions approximately doubled the transmission speed every step of the standardization process, starting with 300 b/s in 1962 until about 28.8-33.6 kb/s in 1996. Modem designers invoked Shannon's capacity formula and considering quantization noise occurring at the Analog-to-Digital conversion process in the PSTN Central Office as additive white Gaussian noise, decided that the channel capacity for such modems is about 36 kb/s. Yet, towards the end of 1990s, modems that operated at transmission speeds close to 56 kb/s, known generally as 56K modems appeared. This talk will first give a brief history of voiceband modems, and it will describe how it was possible to beat the Shannon capacity formula with the 56K modems. The underlying modeling process and the related mathematics will be described. A history of the development of the 56K modems will be presented and, looking back several decades, the technological, as well as the economic and social impact of these modems, will be discussed.

[]The IEEE Day is a commemorative event of the first meeting of engineers worldwide and IEEE members, where they shared their technical ideas. Considering this, an event was held over two days, each featuring two conferences, aiming to familiarize all students with IEEE activities and to inform them about crucial aspects to consider when entering the professional world. Agenda: IEEE Day covers two days: Day 1 (October 3) The event begins with Felipe Bastidas' presentation on "from chaos to reality." Later, Andrés Maca with a talk titled "From Popayan to Toronto, experiences in the software industry." Day 2 (October 4) The second day begins with Luis Javier Suárez's conference entitled "Soft skills for hard results." This is followed by the forum titled "soft skills and work experiences" with jhon fredy romero, paula rosero, sandra buitron, ubeimar martinez, maria caicedo.
